The new Illinois Marine website is up and running. Some of the information from the old site has yet to be added but that will happen in the near future.
Please look around and if you see something that needs to be corrected or added, email me to let me know.
Welcome to The Illinois Marine web site. This site is intended to bring up-to-date information, the latest news and contact information for the Department of Illinois, Districts and all Detachments and Auxiliary Units in the state.
This site will provide real-time updates and listing of information that is of interest to Marines, friends and family. Please visit the Detachment Locator page to find out which Detachment is meeting near you. The Events page shows who is having events that you might be interested in attending or fundraisers that allow us to provide for our veterans. This web site is available to all Marines, family members and interested parties to help pass on information about the Marine Corps League. There are several downloadable forms that are listed on the Forms page. New to the site is Detachment News Letters posted in PDF format.
Congratulations to Illinois for being chosen for the 2021 National Marine Corps League Convention site.
The actual dates of the conventions will be August 9-13, 2021. Hotel dates available will be August 6-14.
At the Department of Illinois' 75th Dept. Convention, we were awarded a National Meritorious Unit Commendation by National Commandant Wendell Webb. All who were Members in Good Standing in June of 2019 are authorized to wear the National Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon. Ribbons will be ordered by individual detachments for their membership.
The essays submitted for the 2021 scholarship grant were outstanding. The process to evaluate and score them requires blind assessment. Each entry is assigned a random code and is graded based on an established key. Committee members John Olejnicki and Bill Barta submit their individual scores and only then are demographics viewed. The few additional points are applied according to the key and a total score is obtained. This year the final scores were very close. Five applicants were awarded an individual grant of $1000. They are:
Sarah Catherine Ames who is accepted at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and is the daughter of Curtis Ames, #1009 McHenry.
Paige Marie Leslie who is accepted at Purdue University and is the granddaughter of Edward Modla, #72 Burbank.
Jenica Elizabeth Limon who is accepted at Carthage College and is the granddaughter of Mike Malmstrom, #607Lincoln.
Kelsey Renee Neihls who is accepted at Lakeland College and is the granddaughter of Larry Neihls, #591 Effingham County.
Christopher Joseph O’Gara who is accepted at Illinois State University and is the grandson of Leroy Totman, #1009 McHenry.
The winners were invited to the Joint Opening Ceremonies and the Past Presidents luncheon. Ms Paige Leslie read her essay aloud at the meeting and also honored us with her a’cappella rendition of our National Anthem. Congratulations to all recipients and thank you to everyone who submitted an application.
